Proposed Increase to the General Fuel Levy, 2026
Closes 31 August 2026 (SAST) · Call for public comment, Standing Committee on Finance
What is being proposed?
National Treasury has published a proposal to increase the general fuel levy by R0.84 per litre and the Road Accident Fund levy by R0.30 per litre, effective from the next fiscal year.
If passed, this would raise the price of petrol and diesel for every road user, and increase the cost of transporting goods, which flows through to food and other essentials.
The committee invited written public comment before making its recommendation.
Why this matters
- Fuel levies are a flat tax: they take a larger share of income from lower earners.
- Transport-cost increases are typically passed on to consumers within weeks.
- Public comment is a formal part of the process; each individual submission must be recorded and considered by the committee.
Tell the committee, in your own words, whether you support or oppose the increase and why.
